Some news to announce - I have been writing a book - 'Bread & War: a Ukrainian story of food, bravery and hope’ - to be published in May 2025 by Duckworth Books and September Publishing.
It’s based on the many trips I have made to Ukraine since the summer of 2022 when I helped to take a convoy of bakery equipment and supplies from London to Kyiv - and then met up with the amazing Bake for Ukraine, who have been working non stop to help small bakeries around Ukraine to provide free bread to people in need. I met so many inspiring Ukrainians who were doing extraordinary things to help their country to keep going during the war that I felt compelled to do what I could to share their stories and experiences, in this substack and now in a book.
I will write more about it in some future posts - but I really want to pay tribute to everyone involved, from photographer Oleksander Baron who took the cover photo, to all the bakers and chefs and businesses and volunteers who I spoke to and traveled with. And the whole team at Bake for Ukraine: there are not many of us, and they are all exhausted by living under the constant stress of war - but all very much uplifted and encouraged by your support.
This is my first book, even though I have worked as a writer for more than 35 years - so it is all a massive learning curve - I am told there is already a page for it on Amazon, so pre-orders are open!
I’ve also launched a Justgiving page to help raise more money for Bake for Ukraine and the bakeries we support to get through this tough winter ahead.
It really is never too late.
